The best remedies for bad breath depend on the causes. However, you can take a few steps to treat the problem, or even prevent it.
When choosing a mouthwash for fresh breath, it is important to look for certain ingredients. Antiseptic ingredients like essential oils or chlorhexidine can kill bacteria that cause bad breath. Fluoride can help prevent cavities and strengthen teeth. Alcohol-free mouthwashes are gentler on the mouth and do not contribute to dry mouth, which can worsen bad breath.

Many years ago, soon after I’d started working in radio, I arrived at the newsroom to be given my assignment for the day. I was asked to visit a clinic treating bad breath where I was to get my own breath tested and interview the doctor.
One natural remedy is saltwater gargles. Gargling with warm saltwater can help reduce inflammation and kill bacteria in the mouth and throat. This can help alleviate symptoms and prevent the formation of tonsil stones.
Ultimately, the bad-breath campaign was so successful that marketing historians refer to it as the “halitosis appeal”—shorthand for using fear to sell product. And, while the modern advertising industry is no stranger to creating a problem to sell its solution, Listerine’s medicalization of mouth odors might just be one of the most successful iterations yet.

Now, what if the unfortunate happens? Or maybe you already have been dealing with these rocks filled with noxious gas. No matter how hard and precise you have been brushing your teeth, it seems like your breath just never gets better. You scrub your tongue relentlessly to no avail. Another great way you can try to remove them is you start using mouthwash in the morning and right after you eat before bed. This way any food particles stuck in there loosen up or just fall right out. Another thing you can do is gargle with some warm salt water. This is a great way to make loose tonsil stones fall right out of your tonsils and of course, you just spit them into the sink. You suggest grabbing some luke warm water and add enough salt that it is useful but not super unpleasant to have in your mouth. Then gargle to try to knock the bacteria out. You can do this as many times as you want but we recommend three times.

You can tell you have tonsil stones if you can see the white deposits trapped in the crevices of your tonsils. Other times, you might notice them when they come out, “appearing” suddenly in your throat or mouth. They are usually white and can be soft and/or gritty.
Both cavities and gum disease are bacterial infections of the oral tissues. Tooth decay is a bacterial infection of the hard tissues of a tooth, and gum disease is an infection of the hard and soft tissues surrounding a tooth (also called periodontal disease). Both of these conditions consist of the reproduction and proliferation of specific disease-causing bacteria, and they stink.
If your breath still smells bad even after brushing your teeth it may be a sign of gum disease and/or cavities. The bacteria that cause bad breath can hide in cavities in your teeth. This makes it difficult to get rid of the bacteria when you're brushing your teeth because it's hidden in places that you can't reach. Similarly, these bacteria can hide in deep pockets caused by gum disease.
