The effectiveness of mouthwash in treating bad breath
A physician may recommend antibiotics, tonsillectomy, or other surgical ways to remove the debris. Drinking plenty of water, gargling with salt water, and controlling the urge to smoke are the necessary steps that the patient cannot avoid.
Halitosis can often be the result of tooth decay and gum disease. Gingivitis and periodontal disease can create cavities or pockets around the gums, giving bacteria a place to hide and multiply. This bacteria can produce foul-smelling breath which short-term freshening methods only mask.
Probiotics can be consumed through supplements or certain foods like yogurt and kefir. Including these foods in your diet can help promote a healthy oral microbiome and reduce bad breath.
Other things to avoid are alcohol, sugary foods, caffeine, and carbonated beverages. These foods and drinks can dry out your throat and feed the anaerobic bacteria that cause bad breath and tonsil stones in the first place.
If you use tobacco, it’s a good idea to quit, and not just for your breath, either. Tobacco use can lead to tooth loss as well as dental implant failure.
Psychogenic halitosis generally has no apparent cause. In this case, the person constantly feels lousy breath coming from their mouth, but another person or any diagnostic test does not detect it. This type can also be associated with other psychologic abnormalities.
To make a baking soda mouthwash, mix one teaspoon of baking soda with a cup of warm water. Stir until the baking soda is completely dissolved. Use this mixture as a mouthwash, swishing it around in your mouth for 30 seconds to one minute before spitting it out. Rinse your mouth with plain water afterward. Repeat this process once or twice a day for best results.
- Garlic and onions: These foods contain sulfur compounds that can be released in the mouth and contribute to bad breath.
