The UK health research body Cochrane is currently assembling a review of the scientific literature on interventions for bad breath. In their previous review of mouthwashes in 2008, the five best trials showed that if they contained anti-bacterials such as chlorhexidine and cetylpyridinium chloride, chlorine dioxide or zinc, they could reduce unpleasant smells to an extent. But the authors did call for more trials to be done. Hopefully this next review will be able to give more information about which mouthwashes to choose.
Bad breath, or halitosis, can have a significant impact on social interactions and relationships. It is important to address this condition not only for the sake of social stigma but also for overall oral health and well-being. Poor oral hygiene, diet, gastrointestinal problems, respiratory issues, medications, chronic diseases, and psychological effects can all contribute to bad breath. By understanding the causes and implementing appropriate prevention strategies and treatment options, individuals can manage their halitosis and improve their quality of life. It is important to seek professional help if self-care measures do not improve bad breath symptoms.

Staying hydrated is essential for maintaining fresh breath. When we don't drink enough water, our mouths can become dry, leading to a condition known as dry mouth or xerostomia. Dry mouth reduces saliva production, which is crucial for washing away bacteria and food particles.

There are some things a person can do to eliminate or at least temporarily mask bad breath. Good oral hygiene, such as brushing the teeth and tongue and flossing, keeps the mouth healthy and can often get rid of bad breath, at least in the short term. Mouthwash may temporarily mask bad breath and can help with oral hygiene. Chewing sugarless gum or sucking on sugar-free mints may temporarily mask bad breath odor. If you find that your gag reflex is too strong for this method, you may want to use a mouth-numbing spray Chloraseptic before you go in with the swab. I’ve also written about other methods here.
Gum (periodontal) disease is caused by the buildup of plaque on the teeth. When you fail to brush and floss properly, the bacteria on your teeth causes toxins to form. This can irritate the gums, cause pockets to form between your teeth and gums that trap food, and cause bad breath.
