The first thing many people do if they suspect they have bad breath is to reach for the mouthwash. The mint or clove flavouring does of course, disguise the smell for a short time, and many mouthwashes also contain antiseptic. The idea is to eliminate the bacteria that leads to foul-smelling compounds. For a time this can work. But there has been some debate concerning containing alcohol and whether it does or doesn’t exacerbate dehydration. A very dry mouth can cause breath to smell worse.

Tonsil stones, or tonsilloliths, are hard, sometimes painful bits of bacteria and debris that get stuck in nooks on your tonsils.
Interestingly, we find that more people are noticing an unpleasant smell as they wear the requisite masks during the current COVID-19 pandemic. So it is appropriate to ask the question: Does wearing a mask give us the opportunity to smell our own breath?
On the way there I did wonder whether this was all a ruse and whether there was something my colleagues were too afraid to tell me. Luckily I was fine, but bad breath is common and we’re not helped by some of the myths surrounding it.

There are numerous causes of bad breath. Many causes are harmless, but some conditions that can cause bad breath can be serious. Many people do brush and floss consistently, but their techniques are incorrect. This means that even though they are going through the motions, they are leaving plaque on the teeth. Others do not maintain a consistent routine of brushing and flossing every single day. Obviously, this also allows plaque to remain on the teeth.
The importance of hydration in preventing halitosis
Whether you have a tonsil stone, have already removed it, or just want to avoid them, adding a drop of these essential oils to your toothbrush when you brush your teeth can help fight the anaerobic bacteria that give tonsil stones their foul smell.
If you find that your gag reflex is too strong for this method, you may want to use a mouth-numbing spray Chloraseptic before you go in with the swab. I’ve also written about other methods here.

Ignoring tonsil stones and halitosis can have several potential complications. Untreated tonsil stones can lead to chronic bad breath, which can have a negative impact on social interactions and self-esteem. The persistent presence of tonsil stones can also contribute to recurrent infections in the throat and tonsils.
Ultimately, this will remove the stones. After you have taken them out, rinse the mouth thoroughly to wash off any debris. Make a note that you don’t use this technique for large stones as this increases the risk of bleeding. If you are having bad breath due to tonsil stones, then consume spices that have aromatic essence. This will help mask the breath odor.
