It can be difficult to determine if your breath smells bad, as we become accustomed to our own odors. However, there are a few ways to test your breath. One method is to lick the back of your hand and let it dry for a few seconds. Then, smell your hand. If there is an unpleasant odor, it may indicate that your breath smells bad.

A dry socket is a potential complication that can occur when a blood clot in the gums becomes dislodged after a tooth extraction. Dry socket signs and symptoms include pain, mouth odor, and unpleasant taste in the mouth. A dentist may treat a dry socket with analgesic dressing. Good oral hygiene, such as brushing the teeth and tongue and flossing, keeps the mouth healthy and can often get rid of bad breath, at least in the short term. Gently slide the floss between your teeth, using a back-and-forth motion. Curve the floss around each tooth in a C shape and slide it up and down to remove plaque and debris. Be sure to floss both sides of each tooth and along the gumline. Use a clean section of floss for each tooth.
