Acid reflux is caused by an overly relaxed lower esophageal sphincter (LES). It is a muscle that acts as a barrier to the stomach and operates similarly to a valve. When it is working correctly, it will open to allow food to pass through the esophagus into the stomach, but when it is too relaxed or faulty, it will remain open, allowing the contents in the stomach to flow back upwards.
Dentists can diagnose halitosis through oral exams and other diagnostic tests. They will examine your mouth for signs of gum disease, tooth decay, or other oral health issues that may be contributing to bad breath. They may also ask about your medical history and any medications you are taking to determine if there are any underlying causes of halitosis.
The reasons for bad breath range from the not-so-bad (you had a slice of garlic pizza) to the more urgent (you’ve got an infection). Understanding some of the most common causes of bad breath can help you work with your dentist and hygienist to put together a plan to keep unpleasant mouth odors away.
Severe bad breath can have a variety of causes and it is important to try and identify the cause in order to get effective treatments. At JVR Dental in Walnut Grove, we know how important your oral health care is. That is why we have put together a list of some of the more popular causes for that.
Brushing and flossing after every meal helps remove these food particles, thus preventing the bacteria buildup that often leads to bad breath.
The Impact of Medications on Your Breath
If you suspect that you have a tonsil stone, the first thing you could do is gargle with salt water, hydrogen peroxide, apple cider vinegar, or antiseptic mouthwash.
After you eat, let your food digest before performing physical activity or lying down. This can allow the contents in your stomach to digest while your LES stays closed.
If you think there’s an issue in your mouth that’s behind your bad breath, seeing a dental professional for treatment can help you get to the bottom of the problem and improve your oral health and the scent of your breath at the same time.
Gargling and using essential oils are two great ways to freshen your breath, fight infections, and kill all of the bacteria that cause the foul smell.
The best remedies for bad breath depend on the causes. However, you can take a few steps to treat the problem, or even prevent it.
