The Link between Halitosis and Gastrointestinal Problems

Salty water can be gargled several times a day to dislodge an existing stone. This is a preferred method of treatment for many people because the alternative of using a toothbrush or Q-tip to pick a stone out is usually met with intense gagging. Picking at tonsil stones is discouraged by doctors because the tissue at the back of the throat is delicate and could be damaged. Doctors recommend treatment such as tonsillectomy only in extreme cases of repeat stones and infection.

Tonsil stones are formed when debris, such as food particles and dead cells, gets trapped in the tonsil crevices. The debris can become trapped in the crypts of the tonsils and harden, forming tonsil stones. Some people are more prone to tonsil stones than others, and there are several factors that can increase the risk of developing them.
To remove your tonsil stones, use a tonsil stone pick or water flosser on a very low setting, but never put too much pressure on your tonsils, even if you cannot get the stone out. Check out my article on the best tonsil stone removal tools.
If tonsil stones are large in size, they can lead to swallowing and may also trigger infections. These stones can sometimes cause a number of side effects like sore throat, swelling, cough, ear pain, and irritation (a sensation of a foreign substance in the throat), etc.
You may need to see an oral specialist (periodontist) for treatment or your primary healthcare provider depending on the cause.
2. Brush Up on Your Oral Hygiene – (Pun intended) You are the only one who can remove dental plaque on a daily basis. This takes both commitment and a great technique. Don’t’ rush through your oral hygiene routine. Ask your dentist or dental hygienist for tips on the best ways to brush and floss. Consider adding a flexible tongue cleaner to your routine to remove plaque from the tongue. As you consistently remove plaque, you reduce the bacterial count in your mouth, which lowers the risk for bad breath.

Alcoholics are some of the most common people to suffer from bad breath, including a number of health problems which adversely affects their digestive systems. When alcohol is consumed, it passes directly into the bloodstream through the small intestine and lining of your stomach.
Your dentist or periodontist may tell you to use an antimicrobial mouth rinse. You may also be told to brush your tongue gently each time you brush your teeth. This will help remove odor-causing bacteria.
If self-care measures do not improve your bad breath, it is recommended to seek professional help from a dentist or healthcare provider. They can conduct a thorough examination to determine the underlying cause of your halitosis and recommend appropriate treatment options.
Sometimes certain medications are the cause of smell or taste disorders, and improvement occurs when that medicine is stopped or changed. Although certain medications can cause chemosensory problems, others particularly anti-allergy drugs seem to improve the senses of taste and smell. Some patients, notably those with serious respiratory infections or seasonal allergies, regain their smell or taste simply by waiting for their illness to run its course. In many cases, nasal obstructions, such as polyps, can be removed to restore airflow to the receptor area and can correct the loss of smell and taste. Occasionally, chemosenses return to normal just as spontaneously as they disappeared. Certain foods and drinks can leave a lasting odor in your mouth, contributing to bad breath. Garlic and onions are notorious for causing bad breath due to their sulfur compounds. These compounds are absorbed into the bloodstream and then exhaled through the lungs, resulting in an unpleasant odor.
